Research Interests

My interests lie in the area of chemical education. At the college level, I am currently incorporating active learning in classes for both science and non-science majors through implementation of POGIL pedagogy and use of clickers. Read News Story

A large portion of my scholarly activities is invested in science outreach/partnership with K12 schools.  I am co-PI with Professor Leah McCoy of the Department of Education on an NSF grant WINS (Wake Innovative Noyce Scholars) with a strategic plan to increase the number of highly trained math and science teachers in high needs public high schools.

Since 2004 I have written a monthly column called Research Advances for the Journal of Chemical EducationRecent professional activities also include directing the NSF-funded SCIMAX, the Culpeper Summer Program (a faculty development program to promote technology adoption into the college classroom) and participating as an instructor in North Carolina’s Operation Chemistry (a professional development workshop for middle school teachers).
