Dr. David Wren earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Davis before getting his M.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder. David then earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Education from the University of Northern Colorado, where his doctoral research focused on the design, development and psychometric evaluation of testing instruments used in both formative and summative assessment in general chemistry classrooms. With a dual appointment as an assistant teaching professor and Director of the Chemistry Center, Dr. Wren is excited to use his Chemical Education research background both in the classroom and in development of the Chemistry Center.
Dr. Wren’s research interests center broadly on understanding the challenges students face while taking introductory chemistry courses. Measuring student learning or attitudinal outcomes using existing assessment instruments, or developing new assessments is central to this understanding. As part of this research, Dr. Wren hopes to identify both traditional and contemporary teaching practices that maximize student learning for students of different backgrounds and preparations.
