Department Mission Statement

Department Mission Statement:

As teachers, our department seeks to educate students in the ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, cultures (broadly conceived), and traditions & receptions both for the intrinsic value of the study itself and to use that study as a means to think more critically, write and speak more cogently, and live more conscientiously, reflectively, and meaningfully.

As scholars, we aim to produce innovative scholarship and open, but critical, thought about the ancient world, with a focus on Greek and Latin literary cultures and ideology.

As members of WFU and the larger Academy, we aim to be a model department, collegially engaged in fostering the above pursuits and in supporting our discipline and the humanities writ large as a necessary and good curricular element of a transformational educational experience.
