Project Wake presents Margot Lee Shetterly, who will speak at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel on February 5. Shetterly is the author of 2016 New York Times bestseller “Hidden Figures,” the true story of black women mathematicians who endured the injustice and indignities of segregation and gender inequality to help America win the space race. The real-life narrative of NASA’s African-American “human computers” explores race, identity, social mobility and scientific innovation and inspired a number one film.
Shetterly’s appearance is part of Project Wake: Exploring Difference and Embracing Diversity. Wake Forest’s summer orientation program for new students focuses on issues of social and intellectual importance, and Shetterly’s “Hidden Figures” was a selection on the summer reading list for the Class of 2021.
This event is open to the public. Students, Faculty, and Staff interested in attending should register by visiting go.wfu.edu/projectwake. Registration is now open.
