Dean’s Office Digest
Spring semester has its own rhythms. Unlike the fall semester, which marches toward the end of the semester and brings shorter and colder days, the spring semester promises longer and lighter days and the excitement of annual spring events. On Feb. 7, in Pugh Auditorium, we listened to 10 beautifully written, insightful, and thought-provoking Senior Orations, written by our seniors on the cusp of their graduation. One of these orations was selected to be presented on Founders Day, Feb. 15. While Founders Day invited us to think about our history, I was struck by how almost all of this year’s Senior Orations referenced transformation, an idea that carries with it a distinct focus on the future.
Universities, by nature, celebrate beginnings and endings and offer the promise of transformation. Each semester provides an opportunity for improvement and growth, not only for students but also for faculty. It’s a chance to enhance teaching methods, design that new class, engage in exciting new research, and pursue grant applications (e.g., Pilot Research Grants (PRG) due Feb. 23, or Faculty Fellowships, due March 15, more details below). It’s inspiring to think about. To that end, I offer a heartfelt thank you to the students who prompted us all to reflect on our own capacity for transformation at any stage. And to spring itself, which is nothing if not a time of growth and transformation: Welcome.

FACULTY FELLOWSHIP NOMINATIONS
Faculty Fellowships honor our best teacher-scholars who are dedicated teachers and mentors with a strong record of scholarly or creative activity. Department chairs and senior faculty are encouraged to submit nominations for faculty within their departments, following these Helpful Tips. The chair must endorse all nominations. The nomination should inform the review committee why this faculty member exemplifies the teacher-scholar ideal or is deserving of recognition as an outstanding teaching professional. Please provide a detailed explanation of all the activities, traits, contributions, and accomplishments in teaching, mentoring, and scholarly and creative work. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 15. For more information, contact Leigh Anne Robinson, wrayla@wfu.edu.
