Department of English
Barry Maine, Professor of English, has been on the faculty at Wake Forest since 1981. He has served as Department Chair, Director of Interdisciplinary Honors, Director of the Open Curriculum, adviser to the College’s pre-law students, Chair of the Judicial Council, and on other committees throughout the College and in the English Department. He holds a BA from the University of Virgina and an MA and PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has published on John Dos Passos; Henry James, Henry Adams, and John Singer Sargeant; and Erich Auerbach and Nelson Goodman. He is a beloved teacher and winner in 2009 of the Jon Reinhardt Award for Excellence in Teaching. His courses on American art and literature, which take place at Reynolda House among the museum’s art, on literature and film, and on American literature at both introductory, advanced, and graduate levels are perennially among students’ favorites. He has been an exemplar of engaged teaching and dedicated service to Wake Forest throughout his career.
