Sam Best, sophomore and Secondary English Education minor, is traveling to China this summer to investigate the potential impacts of “the knowledge economy” on 21st century education. While in China, he will spend the majority of his time as a participant-observer at the Wake Forest Summer Academy in Nanjing. Sam will participate as a co-teacher, helping and observing the Instructors as they encourage the development of higher-order thinking skills, prepare students for the academic rigors of a U.S. college or university, and help orient Chinese students to the culture and lifestyles on an American college campus.
By interacting with Chinese students, working with the Wake Forest alumni who will serve as their Instructors at the Wake Forest Summer Academy, and helping the Summer Academy leadership team, Sam hopes to develop a first-hand understanding of innovative educational program development and the challenges of delivering this instruction to students in a foreign country, says Best. Following the completion of my research in China, I will create and present a short video that documents my research at the WFU Summer Academy and discusses this program’s value towards the development of the global knowledge economy while meeting the needs of two important groups: prospective students from China, and U.S. college and university communities.
As a Richter Scholar, Kara Gaynor, sophomore and Elementary Education major, will conduct an independent research project in China this July at the Wake Forest Summer Academy in Nanjing. Kara’s research will focus on female Chinese high school students preparing for college/university in the U.S. as she seeks to explore the cultural, social, and educational knowledge discrepancies between the Chinese students and American female college freshmen and sophomores. Kara plans to compile and present her research in a presentation designed to help the Wake Forest Community address potential challenges for Chinese students transitioning to the WFU campus, in particular, by calling attention to and suggesting strategies for ameliorating the various cultural, social and educational differences.
