Ali Sakkal and the Many Shapes of Jazz

Ali Sakkal, Assistant Teaching Professor of Education, will be giving the pre-performance talk at upcoming Secrest Artist Series performance featuring the Turtle Island String Quartet with Cyrus Chestnut. With a background in music, Dr. Sakkal will guide the audience through a listening session and conversation about the many variations of jazz.

The Many Shapes of Jazz
Since its birth, Jazz has developed immensely, borrowing from and fusing with a variety of styles and genres of music. During the pre-performance talk, we’ll listen to some of these musical fusions from the past century and learn about their significance in shaping the many diverse and beautiful faces of the art of jazz.
