Heather King and Jayne Grubbs, the 2011 Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award Winners

Heather King teaches mathematics at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, and Jayne Grubbs teaches academically gifted fifth and sixth grade students at Caleb’s Creek Elementary School in Kernersville.

The awards were presented to the recipients by Mary Lynn Redmond, the chair of the WFU Education Department at surprise ceremonies at the schools in which they teach.

The award, given each year to two teachers who are alumni of Wake Forest University, one from the elementary school level and one from the secondary school level, is named for Professor Emeritus of mathematics Marcellus Waddill, and is funded by his son, David Waddill. The award includes a $20,000 cash prize, one of the largest awards for teaching in the country.

The presentations, a complete surprise to the recipients, were planned as part of kick-off celebrations at each of the schools. Mary Lynn Redmond pretended to interrupt the festivities as a surprise guest appearance to present the awards. The principal at each school was very helpful in making sure that this was a memorable event for all.

UPDATE: Please join the Department of Education and the Wake Forest community at the Founder’s Day ceremony on February 16, 2012, at which Heather and Jayne will receive their plaques and an official recognition by the University. Founder’s Day Convocation will be held in Wait Chapel at 4:00 pm, with a reception immediately following in the lobby of the Scales Fine Arts Center.
