Required Courses’ Decriptions

HES 262. Statistics for Health Science (3; fall and spring) Basic statistics with an emphasis on application to research in the health sciences.

HES 312. Exercise & Health Psychology (3; spring only) A survey of the psychological antecedents of exercise and selected topics in health psychology with particular attention to wellness, stress, the biobehavioral basis of coronary heart disease, and the psychodynamics of rehabilitative medicine.

HES 350. Human Physiology (3; fall and spring) A lecture course which presents the basic principles and concepts of the function of selected systems of the human body, with emphasis on the muscular, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and nervous systems. BIO 111 or 114 (preferred) is a prerequisite.

HES 351. Nutrition in Health and Disease (3; fall and spring) A lecture course which presents the principles of proper nutrition including an understanding of the basic foodstuffs and nutrients as well as the influence of genetics, eating behavior, and activity patterns on energy balance and weight control.

HES 352. Human Gross Anatomy (4; spring only) A lecture/ laboratory course in which the structure and function of the human body are studied. Laboratories are devoted to the dissection and study of the human musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and vascular systems.

HES 353. Physiology of Exercise (3; fall and spring) A lecture course which presents the concepts and applications of the physiological responses of the human body to exercise/physical activity. The responses of the neuroendocrine, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems to acute and chronic exercise (training) are examined.

HES 354. Assessment Techniques in Health Sciences (3; fall and spring) A lecture/ laboratory course to develop clinical skills and knowledge in the assessment of health in areas of exercise physiology, nutrition/metabolism, biomechanics/neuromuscular function, and health psychology. The laboratory will emphasize use of instrumentation and analysis /interpretation of data collected on human subjects.

HES 360. Epidemiology (3; fall and spring) A lecture course which introduces  basic epidemiologic methods as applied to the study of health and chronic disease in human populations with emphasis on modifiable risk factors such as physical activity and diet.  Students become familiar with national surveillance data and physical activity recommendations, perform statistical analyses, and critique current epidemiologic studies related to risk factors for chronic disease.

HES 370. Biomechanics of Human Movement (3; fall only) Study of the mechanical principles which influence human movement, sport technique, and equipment design.

HES 201. Health Issues on College Campuses-I (1.5; fall and spring, pass/fail) Introduction to concepts and methods of peer health education development of teaching and group facilitation skills.

HES 202. Health Issues on College Campuses-II (1.5; fall and spring, pass;fail) Development and delivery of educational programs on a variety of health issues relevant to college students.

HES 232. Emergency Medical Training. (3; fall and spring) Lectures and practical experiences in preparation for responding to medical emergencies, including: Patient assessment; airway management; cardiopulmonary resuscitation; O2 therapy; management of shock; trauma and environmental emergencies; and head/spine/musculoskeletal injuries. North Carolina state exam for EMT certification is offered.

HES 310. Clinical Externship (2.0; fall, spring, and summer; pass/fail) A semester experience  involving application of theory and methods of solving problems in a field setting  in an area in line with the student’s future career goals. Download Required Form >>

HES 311. Clinical Internship (2.0; fall, spring, and summer; pass/fail) A semester experience in an HES-sponsored exercise intervention program or research study. The student has direct contact with participants in the program, and may assist with assessment of participants health status and monitoring during exercise sessions.  Students will write a case study analysis of selected patients with a focus on risk factor assessment and review of multiple intervention strategies. Download Required Form >>

HES 320. Mindfulness Meditation in Behavioral Medicine (2; pass/fail) Study of contemplative science in the realm of behavioral medicine. Content includes recent evidence from neuroscience and outcome research on both mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-bases cognitive therapy. Taught in a seminar format with laboratory experience. P-POI

HES 372. Anatomy Dissection Laboratory (2; spring only) A laboratory course that involves human cadaver dissection of the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, pulmonary, and cardiovascular systems. P-POI

HES 375. Advanced Physiology of Exercise (3; spring only) A lecture course which provides an in-depth examination of the physiological mechanisms responsible for both the acute and chronic changes which occur with exercise. Included are cellular changes in response to exercise, the ventilatory response to exercise and metabolic consequences of exercise.

HES 382. Individual Study (1, 1.5, 2; fall, spring, and summer) Independent study directed by an HES faculty adviser. Download Required Form >>

HES 384. Special Topics in Health and Exercise Science (1.5, 2, 3; fall and spring selected semesters) Intensive investigation of a current scientific research topic in health or exercise science with focus on a specific topic.

HES 386. Honors Research (2.0; spring only) Directed study and research in preparation for a major paper on a subject of mutual interest to the student and faculty honors adviser.
