German visiting scholar Dr. Martina Siebert, Research Librarian and East Asia area specialist of Berlin State Library will present a public lecture on Tue, October 25, 2016, 4:30-6:00 pm, at TRIBBLE A110 DeTamble Auditorium.   Titled “Knowing by Listing: Pulu, A Genre of Chinese Writings on Material Culture and Nature Studies,” this talk explores the genre of specialized monographs on material culture and nature studies from the perspective of knowledge classification and management. These texts exemplify the engagement of Chinese scholars from the 10th to 19th century with specialized knowledge on man-made and natural things such as bronze objects, flowers, or goldfish. Pushing the borders of the standard fields of erudition beyond strictly Confucian concerns, they also provide us with an excellent basis on which to examine what constituted an “information package” about nature and material culture in late imperial China.
