Words Awake!: About Ammons, A Celebration of Wake Forest Writers and Writing

On December 7-8, 2018, Wake Forest is hosting an event celebrating the poetry of A. R. “Archie” Ammons. Maria Henson will discuss the journalistic and book-loving careers with our four latest Wake Forest Writers Hall of Fame inductees:  Linda Carter Brinson (WS Sentinel and Journal); Betsy Teter (founder of Hub City Books and Press); Jo DeYoung Thomas (Managing Editor, Foreign Correspondent for the New York Times); and Doug Waller (Washington Editor, Time Magazine, and biographer).  We will hear from alumni/ae poets, in a session moderated by Ed Southern (NC Writers Network) and including Robert West, Kathleen Brewin Lewis, Lamaya Covington Williams, Clint McCown, and others, who come from and whose work might be described as of the South.  We will enjoy a colloquy among alumni and Wake Forest Writers Hall of Fame members Al Hunt (Bloomberg)Ed Wilson (WFU), and Maria Henson (journalist, Pulitzer Prize winner, and WFU Magazine Editor) about those Wake Forest teachers and experiences that instilled critical thinking and inspired investigative journalism.  There will be a luncheon, inducting our four new Hall of Famers, along with a remembrance of Wake Forest Writers Hall of Fame member Penny Niven, whose papers will be received by our Z. Smith Reynolds Library deans and staff.  Our luncheon keynote speaker is Al Hunt (Bloomberg News), whose investigative reporting and command of our national political life and zeitgeist have earned him awards and loyal readers/listeners in print and television.  WordsAwake! will bring your students up close with journalists, writers, and editors who have shaped our state and national history.

This event is free of charge and begins with reception at 5:15 pm.   The program begins at 6:00 pm and will conclude by 7:45 pm. It will be held in Byrum Hall, the WFU Admissions/Welcome Center.  There is ample free parking.
