By sponsoring a wide variety of academic programs, conferences, lectures and events, the Latin American and Latino Studies Program hopes to facilitate dialogue and debate over the most important issues that confront the region as well as increase cultural diversity and awareness amongst the Wake Forest and local communities. The Program has brought many world-renowned scholars of and experts on Latin America to the Wake Forest campus, ranging from world-renowned artists and award-winning authors to political decision makers and top academics. In 2007, for example, the Latin American and Latino Studies Program sponsored a major conference on immigration policy entitled “Immigration in a Land of Immigrants.” The conference welcomed the likes of Mr. Ray Marshal, U.S. Secretary of Labor under the Carter administration, and Florida Senator Mel Martinez to campus. The Program will continue to sponsor events that spark important discussions.
