“The Wild World of Infinite Groups”

The study of infinite groups is wild; it is known that not all questions concerning them are solvable. By studying group actions on a variety of algebraic, geometric, or analytic spaces, we are able to transfer information back and forth between the spaces and the groups. In this accessible talk, we will, as time permits, discuss the following: the Ping-Pong Lemma and recognizing free groups, a group acting geometrically on Rn is almost Zn, and a group with Kazhdan’s property (T) is necessarily finitely generated.
