Choral Ensembles

WAKE FOREST CONCERT CHOIR

The Wake Forest Concert Choir was founded in 1948 by the late Professor Thane McDonald. The choir presents choral programs on campus each semester, sings in the Winston-Salem area, and travels internationally every several years. The 50-member mixed ensemble sings in the traditional Moravian Lovefeast held in Wait Chapel each December, the largest service of its kind in the country.

Concert Choir’s international touring program began in May 2007, when the ensemble traveled to Vienna and Austria and performed concerts at the Votivkirche and Peterskirche in Vienna, the Bergkirche in Eisenstadt, and Melk Abbey.  In March 2010 the choir traveled to Rome and Italy and performed concerts at Santa Susanna Church and St. Eustachio Church in Rome, Chris Cappell College in Anzio, and the Lower Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi.  In March 2014 the choir traveled to Galway and Dublin, Ireland and performed concerts at Galway Cathedral, St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway, Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, and St. Ann’s Church of Ireland in Dublin.  In March 2016, the choir returned to Italy, performing in Venice for the first time at St. Mark’s Basilica and the Chiesa di San Rocco.  The ensemble then traveled to Rome to sing at St. Peter’s in the Vatican and for the second time at Chris Cappell College in Anzio.  Concert Choir’s fifth international tour is being planned for Spain in March 2018.

The group has performed in the United States at the Washington National Cathedral, the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and the First Baptist Church in Washington, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, the Basilica of St. Vincent in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia, Duke University Chapel, Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh, and the North Carolina Collegiate Choral Festival.

The singers represent the finest vocal and musical talent on campus and major in music as well as many other academic subjects. The Concert Choir sings the significant choral literature from plainchant to recently composed works and joins with the other music department choral ensembles in presenting major choral works with soloists and orchestra. Their CD recording of Minnesota composer Jeffrey Van’s A Procession Winding Around Me is available through Centaur Records at www.centaurrecords.com.

Concert Choir is offered for 1 hour credit under the course number Music 115. The choir meets on MWF from 12-12:50 pm in Room M208. An audition is required for acceptance into the ensemble and auditions are held during the first week of each semester. There is no preparation required for the audition. At the audition prospective members vocalize with the director to determine their voice’s characteristics and their musical capacities. Music reading is preferred but is not required. Detailed information on joining the Concert Choir is posted on the bulletin board outside Room M208 of the Music Wing of the Scales Fine Arts Center.

COLLEGIUM MUSICUM VOCAL ENSEMBLE

The Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble is a select chorus of 20 singers that performs with the Collegium Musicum Instrumental Ensemble to present concerts concentrating on a specific composer or national style from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods of music history.  The ensemble sings in English, Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish in order to present this important repertoire to our audiences. As well, this ensemble provides choral selections by more recent composers for campus concerts with the Concert Choir.  It offers the participants the chance to specialize in the presentation of early music and to enjoy singing in a small group.

Collegium Vocal Ensemble is offered for 1 hour credit under the course number Music 114. The choir meets on TR from 5-6:15 pm in Room M208.  An audition is required for acceptance into the ensemble and auditions are held during the first week of each semester. WAKE FOREST CHAMBER CHOIR

The Wake Forest Chamber Choir performs in Brendle Recital Hall with the large choral ensembles, for administrative functions on campus, and in the Winston-Salem community for high school audiences.  The repertoire is chosen from classical choral genres, vocal jazz, and contemporary a cappella to be entertaining to our audiences.  Students joining the group must be willing to be flexible with their schedules to perform in the evenings and on weekends.

The choir is offered for 1 hour credit under the course number Music 124 Section F. To audition for open spaces in the group, students must be current or former members of Concert Choir or Collegium Vocal Ensemble or current individual instruction voice students. Auditions are held during the second week of each semester.  At the audition prospective members vocalize with the director and also participate in score reading experiences.  Music reading and the ability to learn vocal parts outside of rehearsal are required.  Detailed information on joining the Chamber Choir is presented to the members of the large ensembles and voice instruction students at the beginning of each semester.
