First Year Students

Wake Forest law studentsWelcome to Wake Forest!  As a new student, you should not need to worry too much about choosing a major, or choosing specific legally-related courses.  Your first priority in your first year is to maintain a strong GPA.  Your first-year seminar and writing seminar courses will provide excellent writing training.  You might also want to include some introductory courses in political science, history, philosophy, or economics as part of your first-year explorations.  Make sure to explore such options with your lower division adviser, and let your adviser know that you’re considering law school at some point in the future.

In addition to your courses, try to use some of your free time this year to learn as much as you can about law schools and legal careers in general.  How?  Start by browsing the “Resource Links” portion of this website.  Sign up for the Prelaw Advising email list. Consider joining the Prelaw Society.  Ask the admissions office at one or more law schools if you can visit a class.  And, start meeting and talking with some lawyers.  You may be able to identify a summer internship through contacts in your hometown.  In sum, start exploring all the many career options, legal and other, that may interest you in the future.  Once you’ve done some initial exploration, a quick meeting with the Prelaw adviser may also be useful at some point during your first year.  Just make an appointment!
