Mission and Goals of the Program

The Department firmly believes that foreign languages are at the core of a liberal arts education. Learning a foreign language significantly improves students’ analytical thinking and linguistic skills in their native as well as in their chosen second language. The increased control and effectiveness in communication that result from foreign language learning have long-term and wide-ranging benefits for all students, whatever their academic goals.

Our courses in language, literature, and civilization also give students tools and texts for broadening and deepening their awareness and understanding of other cultures. The curriculum in Romance Languages reflects the tripartite nature of the program, dedicated to introducing students to the language, literature and culture of Italy, Spain, France, and Hispanic and Francophone countries.
