Mission and Goals of the Program

The Department firmly believes that foreign languages are at the core of a liberal arts education. Learning a foreign language significantly improves students’ analytical thinking and linguistic skills in their native as well as in their chosen second language. The increased control and effectiveness in communication that result from foreign language learning have long-term and wide-ranging benefits for all students, whatever their academic goals.

Our courses in Spanish and Italian languages and cultures also give students tools and texts for broadening their awareness of other cultures.  Foreign language study is a rich and essential part of today’s education for navigating successfully the global contexts of the 21st century.
