DIRECTOR’S NOTES

I inherited my original cast recording of Kiss Me, Kate (along with New Faces of 1952, Oklahoma and, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) from my mother. While I appreciate the ‘new musicals’ Sunday in the Park, Phantom, Sweeny Todd, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, etc. (though not so much Cats) I still equate the term “musical theatre” with the golden era of the 40’s and 50’s which brought us the genius and craftsmanship
of Hart, Hammerstein and Rodgers among others.

But, I have a special place in my heart for Cole Porter – his wit and cleverness, and his musical humor, epitomize this age of musical theatre for me. In the 1999 Broadway revival (the version which you are watching) Don Sebesky has aptly captured
the witty, sometimes naughty humor of Porter’s work in the musical arrangements for the orchestra.

I hope you will enjoy the production. I know the cast, musicians and crew have enjoyed getting to know Cole Porter and all his characters.

Thanks to all who have made this process happen.
