Academic Program

The Internship is approximately 35 hours per week throughout the spring or fall semester (or 10 ½ week summer term) at a location based upon the student’s area of interest (e.g., law and criminal justice; science and policy; media and communication; advocacy, service and arts; and business and information technology).  The student actually selects the final internship location from all offers received following telephone interviews with the agencies/organizations/businesses of interest.  The internship is awarded 6 hours elective credit, pass/fail mode, for the spring or fall semester (5 hours for the summer term).

An Academic Course is selected by the student from specific course offerings provided by TWC’s adjunct faculty.  The academic course, having received prior approval by the chair of a Wake Forest department/program, is awarded 3 hours credit, grade mode, for the spring, fall or summer term.  The academic course may count toward the major, minor, or as an elective, at the sole discretion of the appropriate Wake Forest department/program chair.

An Independent Study or Directed Study is required ONLY during the spring or fall semester. This 3-hour course, grade mode, is arranged by the student in consultation with a Wake Forest professor and is completed during the spring or fall semester in Washington, DC.

Therefore, for the spring or fall semester, each student will enroll in an Internship (6 hours), an Academic Course (3 hours), and an Independent Study or Directed Study (3 hours) for a total of 12 hours.

During the summer term, each student will enroll in an Internship (5 hours) and an Academic Course (3 hours) for a total of 8 hours.
