Scholars, writers, and teachers dedicated to a culture of writing

Welcome to the Writing Program in the Department of English at Wake Forest University. We are a group of scholars and writers who teach writing as a discipline to be practiced over a lifetime.

Students in a peer review workshopWe begin with the first-year writing seminar, a rigorous class for entering college students that introduces them to writing as a tool for critical thinking and discovery. The program also provides tutors at the Writing Center, available to any undergraduate who needs help with any phase of writing, from organizing the rough draft of a freshman essay to polishing a senior thesis. We work with faculty across the curriculum to strengthen writing within and across disciplines. Finally, we are developing a minor in writing that will give students the chance to concentrate on creative writing, academic writing or writing in the professions.

We believe that the best writing creates an environment for intellectual inquiry and allows students and scholars to discover the full complexity of their ideas. We are also committed to helping our students communicate those ideas clearly and effectively. We invite you to join us in making Wake Forest University a community of writers.
