Kathryn M. Mayers holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; a Masters of Arts in Hispanic Literature and Linguistics, and Comparative Literature; and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and German Language and Literature from State University of New York at Binghamton. As a Professor of Spanish, Mayer’s interests are Renaissance and Baroque poetry and literary historiography with a particular focus on visual culture and the intersections of verbal and visual representation. Kathryn’s publications include articles on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Hernando Domínguez Camargo, and Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. Her book Visions of Empire in Colonial Spanish American Ekphrastic Writing (in press) studies the rhetorical and ideological role of a number of texts that speak for and about pictures during the period between the Conquest and the independence of Spanish America. In addition to her teaching and scholarship, Mayer’s also serves the Wake Forest community as the Co-chair of the Honor and Ethics Council.
